Careful planning prior to construction is required for the preservation of existing trees.  This preparation will aid in avoiding damage from soil compaction and let the trees and shrubs adjust to new conditions.

Rockwell Associates will provide a complete Insect and Disease diagnosis on your trees and shrubs and suggest proper treatment.

Arboriculture Consulting

Trees are one of the greatest assets on a property but if not properly cared for, they can also cause great damage.

Fine Pruning of Ornamental Trees & Shrubs

One of the best investments you can make in regard to your property is to establish and maintain a proper pruning program.  The removal of certain parts of a plant can promote safety, appearance, structural integrity and health.  Incorrect pruning can harm a plant so it is important to make sure that the pruning is completed properly.

Rockwell Associates will develop a pruning program and complete your pruning of ornamental trees and shrubs according to the industry standards of ANSI (American National Standards Institute).

Pruning a Deciduous Shrub

Deciduous shrubs are those that lose their foliage during the winter season and have a unique ability to renew themselves almost indefinitely. The secret to keeping your shrubs looking young and healthy is proper pruning. Every year a deciduous shrub produces many shoots from the plants' base or roots. Wait to begin pruning deciduous shrubs until they are about three years old. The best time to prune deciduous shrubs that do not bloom in Spring is late winter. Wait to prune shrubs that flower in Spring until after they bloom. The goal is to remove all but 1/3 of the plants shoots. Below is a basic guidline for pruning deciduous shrubs.

Step 1 - Start by removing long shoots coming up from base, as indicated in yellow, that spoil the shrub's shape and appearance. Step 2 - Remove all branches that are lying on the ground as well as all the broken, diseased, dead, or criscrossing branches.

Step 3 - Thin out about 1/3 of the oldest branches, leaving no stubs. After blooming the next season cut out about 1/3 of the oldest and all of the dead branches and repeat year after year.

Tree Fertilization

Trees, just as all other living things, require certain nutrients for growth and reproduction.  Before any nutrients can be given to the trees, a soil test needs to be performed to determine the current soil conditions.  Once the soil test results have been returned, a determination can be made as to which nutrients to add and quantities of these nutrients.

It is very important to perform the soil test first because adding the wrong nutrients or the wrong amounts can damage the tree.  It is best to fertilize as soon as possible to prevent any future problems.

PHC (Plant Health Care)

The most common reason people contact an arborist is fear that something might be wrong with a tree.  At times, the cause for concern may be premature.  However, sometime if a problem goes undetected for a long period of time, complete removal of the shrub or tree may be the only option.

The objective of Plant Health Care (PHC) is to develop a proper program based on all landscapes.  A most effective Plant Health Care program is based on observation, preventative maintenance, and appropriate intervention.

It is encouraged that the client has a good maintenance program established for their landscaping.  This would include such items as proper pruning, appropriate use of fertilizer and pesticides, and proper watering.  Appropriate plant identification, correct diagnosis of insects, diseases and nutrient deficiencies of plants, can aid in the healthy development of the client’s landscaping plants.

Rockwell Associates strives to provide you with the best possible Plant Health Care program available for your individual situation.

Tree Planting

There is a wide selection of plant material to produce many different landscapes.  New species and varieties of plants are constantly being presented that carry many different character and to meet specific needs which include flower and fruit features, full color, form and size and insect resistance.

In addition to physical characteristics, some preferences to consider are sunlight, temperature, soil conditions and irrigation.

Rockwell Associates will help you to select the right plant for the right location.
